River Walk

To help us plan this year’s work parties as well as identifying any urgent works needing done, a few members of the committee will be walking the river in the next few days.

As well as identifying and recording any invasive plants (such as Giant Hogweed, Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed) we’ll also be looking at anything that is causing obstructions to the river or access.

If there are any particular areas that need attention, please let us know so we can make a point of seeking them out.

Club Hut

On a few occasions over the past few months, the club hut has been left in a bit of a mess.  We’re not sure whether this has been members (hopefully not) but it’s equally concerning if non-members are getting access to the club hut.

This week however, the club hut was trashed.  The tools cabinet was broken into and equipment taken, the pipe at the back of the stove was broken and part-burnt wood and ashes were scattered all over the floor.

There were no signs of forced entry so either the door had been left open, a non-member has the door entry code or, much more worryingly, the damage was caused by a member…

A lot of hard work (and club funds) have been used over the past couple of years to improve and maintain the club hut.  Various work parties have taken place with members working hard to improve the club hut for the benefit of all members.

It’s essential that we make sure that this club asset is protected so please make sure…

When leaving the club hut, make sure the door is closed and locked.  Turn the handle to make sure it’s secure.

If you see the door open but there’s nobody about, please just close the door rather than assuming someone will return to close it.

Don’t give the door entry code to anyone – even if you believe they are a club member.

If anyone doesn’t have the code, they can contact the club via the website or by popping into Hooked on Fishing in Renfrew.

If you notice any suspicious activity or any damage to the club hut it can be reported via the website, the bailiff’s contact numbers or to Hooked on Fishing.

If it’s urgent, please contact the police in the first instance.

Few fishing clubs in this area have a club hut and ours is a great haven for our members when the weather turns or when they want to have a seat and a warm-up by the fire.  Lets make sure we protect this resource as it’s for all our benefit.

Salmon can ‘sniff out’ predators

An interesting article on the BBC wesbite about research being undertaken at Swansea University.

Quote from the article:

“Salmon can sense mammal predators because they can tell whether they have eaten salmon before, according to new research.

Swansea University scientists found the fish can “sniff out” otters and other common predators.”

I wonder if they can ‘sniff out’ salmon anglers as well…

Work Party photos Saturday 20 August 2011

Our second last work party of the year took place on Saturday 20 August 2011.

A few keen members turned up and the decision was taken to attempt to remove some of the fallen tree which was blocking the river just up from the club hut.

Fallen Tree

A large amount of plant materials and rubbish had built up behind the obstruction and was impeding the flow of the river.

Can't see the wood for the trees

It was chainsaw time…

It looked like a massive job (well it was..) but a power of work was done

Pass me my snorkel I'm going deep

We even had a few junior members helping out with moving the wood.

In all, it was a good day with a lot of work being done by a few dedicated members (although there were some spectators too…)

I love to help guys but these are my 'dress waders'

One particularly enthusiastic member even decided to go for a bit of a swim…but it wouldn’t be right to say who!

I think I'm starting to dry out now

Our special thanks go to everyone who turned up and worked so hard for the benefit of all our club members.  A link to the full photo album is available here along with a couple of videos shot by one of our juniors.

Our next work party will be the last scheduled work party of the season and will take place on Sunday 18 September 2011.  Members are asked to meet at the club hut in time for an 11am start.  Anyone attending the work party must sign in before starting.

For anyone who hasn’t yet attended any work parties this year, this is your last chance…
